Radon Testing

3 Steps to Take If You Suspect Radon in Your Home

If you suspect there’s radon entering your Reno area home, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your family. The problem with radon is that you can’t see, smell, or taste it. So how do you know if it’s causing your family harm? At TEK Inspections, we recommend taking these three steps to discover if there’s radon in your home and to safely keep it from harming your family.

1. Check for Symptoms

Because you can’t see, smell, or taste radon, you need to rely on other methods of detection. There are specific symptoms that excess exposure to radon can cause such as persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, and chest pain. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, and frequent infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. Be sure to make an appointment with your doctor, especially if you have a multitude of more severe symptoms.

2. Schedule a Radon Test

The next step you’ll want to take is to schedule a radon test. Many modern radon testing methods can detect radon in your home within 48 hours. At TEK Inspections, we use continuous radon monitors that can indicate various spikes in radon levels as well as prevent any tampering with the test results. Upon completion of the professional radon test, you will know without a doubt if you have dangerous levels of radon in your home.

3. Install a Radon Mitigation System

If your home does test positive for high levels of radon, the last step is to install a radon mitigation system. This device effectively disperses any radon in your home, keeping your family safe from the effects of radon. Our professional inspectors are happy to recommend an affordable system that you can easily install and maintain yourself, or a professional radon remediation company that can install high-quality and effective radon mitigation systems.
